Second thoughts

Got Romo; who needs Manning?

When the unbeaten Denver Broncos play at Dallas today, Cowboys fans will get to see Peyton Manning, the NFL’s hottest quarterback through four games (16 TD passes, 0 interceptions).

But Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones says signing Manning in free agency before last season wouldn’t have been the right move for the Cowboys.

Jones said on KRLD-FM in Dallas that after the Colts cut Manning in March of 2012, the Cowboys weren’t interested in signing him. In Jones’s opinion, the Cowboys already have the franchise quarterback they need with Tony Romo.

“I was so committed to Romo, so committed to his future,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “Of course, Peyton has been a friend for a long time and someone we respect a lot.

There were a lot of moving parts during that particular time. The real reason it didn’t work out is because we are as committed as we are to Tony.” Firing Lane

From Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “The question isn’t why Lane Kiffin was fired by Southern Cal, the question is whyhe was ever hired by Southern Cal in the first place?

Actually, why has he ever been hired by anybody? Seriously, what’s he ever done?

Let’s be honest, shall we: His most impressive credential as ahead-coaching candidate is that he’s Monte Kiffin’s son.” The Byrd man

The Pittsburgh Pirates were hoping for a key bat and a veteran presence when they acquired well-traveled outfielder Marlon Byrd just before the waiver deadline in August. Byrd, 36, has been better than advertised.

Byrd hit .318 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 30 games for the Pirates and has kept it going in the playoffs.

He hit a home run in the wildcard victory over Cincinnati and scored twice in Game 2 of the NL division series against St. Louis.

“This guy has thrown aces all over the table,” Pittsburgh Manager Clint Hurdle said.

“Clubhouse demeanor, the game edge, the quality at-bats, the ability to defend in right field, modeling the behavior you’re looking to see late in the season at the plate, in the batter’s box.

Young players get to see it.”

“Both he and [Justin] Morneau were able to do it. For a guy with no playoff experience, you would think he has a bunch,” he said.

Major problems

From Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Apparently the elevators at O.co Coliseum have already had issues. Everyone has fingers crossed for the plumbing. When they talk about if Oakland can make it to Game 5 or 7 in a series, they may really mean whether the stadium will hold up that long.”Well, duh!
