Miami pulls away, tops Georgia Tech

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Stephen Morris threw for three touchdowns, Duke Johnson rushed for 184 yards and No. 14 Miami remained unbeaten after shaking off a rough opening quarter to beat Georgia Tech 45-30.

Phillip Dorsett, Clive Walford and Allen Hurns caught scoring passes for Miami (5-0, 1-0), which scored 21 points in the final 7:15. Dallas Crawford ran for two scores in the fourth quarter, and Ladarius Gunter added a 30-yard interception return for another touchdown with 1:08 left.

David Sims had two rushing touchdowns for Georgia Tech (3-2, 2-2), which wasted a 17-point lead against Miami last season and blew another double-digit advantage Saturday - plus missed a fourth-quarter extra point that would have tied the game. The Yellow Jackets led 17-7 after controlling the first quarter, then wound up losingto Miami for the fifth consecutive time.

Crawford got his sixth rushing touchdown of the season midway through the fourth, then added an 18-yarder to seal the victory for the Hurricanes, who dominated the second half and now get 12 days off before heading to North Carolina on Oct. 17.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC Rutgers survives

DALLAS - Rutgers freshman Justin Goodwin’s 17-yard touchdown run gave the Scarlet Knights a 55-52, three-overtime victory over SMU on Saturday.

The Knights (4-1) survived SMU’s (1-4) rallies from two 21-point deficits.

In other games involving AAC teams, Two Central Florida (4-1, 1-0) touchdowns in 9 seconds late in the fourth quarter gave the Knights a come-from-behind 24-17 victory over host Memphis (1-3, 0-1). ... Nate Godwin scored on a long blocked field goal return and DeDe Lattimore scooped up a fumble for another touchdown to help South Florida (1-4, 1-0) earn a 26-20 victory over Cincinnati (3-2, 0-1) in Tampa, Fla.

SUN BELT Thomas’ 2 TDs lift Troy

TROY, Ala.- Eric Thomas caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Corey Robinson with seven seconds left to lift Troy to a 34-33 victory over South Alabama on Saturday.

Thomas, who had 5 catches for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns, became the Sun Belt Conference all-time leader in touchdown receptions (26).

South Alabama (2-3, 1-1) took a 33-27 lead when Jereme Jones scored on a 65-yard catch and run to cap a 99-yard scoring drive with 48 seconds remaining.

Corey Robinson completed 20 of 26 passes for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the game-winner to Thomas. Deon Anthony added 95 yards passing and 2 touchdowns for Troy (3-3, 1-1).
