Ruptured aneurysm caused death of freshman at UCA

CONWAY - A University of Central Arkansas freshman found dead on campus earlier this week suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, a preliminary autopsy found.

Jaykwantay Girley, 18, of Greenbrier was found unconscious and declared dead a short time later in a restroom of Hughes Residential Hall on Wednesday, the university said.

The school said in anews release Friday that the Faulkner County coroner had notified the UCA Police Department of the state medical examiner’s finding.

A vigil in honor of Girley, nicknamed “JJ,” was held by Rush Campus Ministries on Thursday night with about 200 people attending.

UCA President Tom Courtway said the “candlelight vigil, in honor of JJ, was an outpouring of love and caring for the Girley familyfor their loss and the loss of a member of the UCA family.

“We once again extend our deepest condolences to his mother and family and will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

A pancake-supper fundraiser, with all proceeds donated to Girley’s family, will be held at Christian Cafeteria today from 4 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at various locations on campus.
