WHAT’S IN A DAME

Helping cups run over for coalition

I’m giving some support to a cause.

Quite literally.

I’m participating in Brassiere Bazaar: Bras for a Cause. The fundraiser to benefit the Young Survival Coalition, an organization for young women diagnosed with breast cancer, takes place Thursday at Cornerstone Pub & Grill in North Little Rock.

The free event, organized by Jennifer Wiseman of Bryant, the Arkansas leader of the coalition and a breast cancer survivor, features a live auction of bras designed by local and national celebrities - everyone from area media personalities and Arkansas first lady Ginger Beebe to actress Kathy Najimy (King of the Hill), Nadia Giosia of Bitchin’ Kitchen, producer/director Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) and more.

And me. That is, if I bust a move and get busy Bedazzling soon.

As of press time, I actually haven’t even begun to bling out the already elaborate pink-and-black, push-up-style Betsey Johnson 32 DD (that’s an actual size that actual women wear?) undergarment - donated by Dillard’s - I’ve been given to garnish.

Which I had to admit to the other Jennifer when she texted almost two weeks ago to keep abreast of my status.

“The event is two weeks from today,” she warned.

Hey, reporters work best under pressure!

But maybe some of the contributors have their masterpieces made. I did some asking around.

“Pool Boy made ours,” says Heather Brown, who hosts the morning show at KLAL-FM, Alice 107.7 with Adam “Pool Boy” Dunaway, adding “we went for the funny.” It should have people busting out laughing.

Heather did add one finishing touch: “I just stole a pink hair bow from my 2-year-old to place in the center.”

Sharpe Dunaway, program director of KVLD-FM, Sharpe 99.3 out of Russellville, wouldn’t disclose any details, keeping his undergarment under wraps.

“The bra I am creating isn’t finished yet and is top secret at the moment, as I am in a friendly competition with Ed Buckner [of KTHV, Channel 11] and Mike Kennedy [of KKPT-FM, The Point 94.1] as to whose bra will raise the most money.”

Yeah, I’m thinking Sharpe hasn’t started yet either.

One standout, the other Jennifer says, is a garden-theme undergarment from Liz Massey of KTHV that is covered entirely with green moss and incorporates fake birds and butterflies.

Craig O’Neill, also of KTHV, reports his wife, artist and author Jane Hankins painted one, “with two big eyes on the cups and written on the inside, ‘Hey, look me in the eyes, buddy.’”

The bras will be modeled (thankfully not by us) and up for bid. Proceeds of the lingerie auction - and a silent auction featuring signed memorabilia (from folks like singer Miranda Lambert and actor Ted Danson collected by the other Jennifer via Twitter), restaurant gift cards and movie passes - will go to Young Survival Coalition.

Brassiere Bazaar: Bras for a Cause will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Cornerstone Pub, 314 Main St., North Little Rock. See more details at facebook.com/events/472218722874138/. Something to get off your chest?
