Walmart plans on opening a Neighborhood Market in Farmington next fall.

The retailer will present plans to Farmington Planning Commission on Dec. 23, and Mayor Ernie Penn said he doesn't expect any issues for the proposed site at the corner of Main Street and Grace Lane, across from City Hall and east of Bob Folsom Elementary School.

“About 28,000 cars go through town on a daily basis, and we would like for more of them to stop and shop,” Penn said. “This store will help improve our tax base drastically.”

Construction should begin early next year.

Walmart is in the process of building several Neighborhood Markets in Northwest Arkansas. The company announced plans in September to open stores in Centerton and Siloam Springs in the fall of 2014 as well.

A Neighborhood Market in the Midtown Center in downtown Bentonville is slated to open in early 2015.

The Farmington Neighborhood Market will sit three miles west of the Walmart Supercenter in Fayetteville and seven miles east of the Walmart Express in Prairie Grove.

The Prairie Grove store opened in June 2011 and was among the retailer’s first small-format locations.

The average size of the various Walmart store designs ranges from 15,000 square feet for an Express store to 187,000 square feet for a Supercenter. The average Neighborhood Market is 42,000 square feet.

Penn said he is excited Walmart saw the potential of putting a store in Farmington.

“We don’t have a lot of shopping areas in our small town,” he said. “This will pull people in who may have otherwise gone somewhere else.”

The store will include grocery items, a pharmacy, deli, bakery and household supplies. Company officials expect the store to create up to 95 jobs.

“We think this store can be part of the solution for folks who need a job or want more affordable options close to where they live or work,” said Erica Jones, Walmart spokeswoman.
