Douglas marks 90th birthday

Gene Douglas of Gravette will celebrate his 90th birthday with a party from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Nov. 30 at the Hiwasse Community Center on Firehouse Road off of Arkansas 279.

Family, friends and neighbors are invited to attend, but the family is requesting no gifts be brought. Douglas is a farmer in the Gravette area.

He is the father of four children, Brenda Herbaugh and husband Larry of Alabama; David Douglas and wife Stacy of Fayetteville; Ronnie Douglas of Gravette; and Stephen Douglas and wife Penny, also of Gravette.

Preservation board chooses Wing

Tom Wing, University of Arkansas at Fort Smith assistant history professor and director of the Drennen-Scott Historic Site, has been named to the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas board.

HPAA is a statewide nonprofit group that was founded in1981. Wing will serve a four-year term.

Fish publishes photo journal

Miles Fish, an instructor at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, has published a new photo journal, “Dodici: The First Twelve Italian Summers,” that’s now available on Apple iBooks.

The book includes hundreds of photos from the last dozen years in various parts of the Mediterranean country and includes a special section of Vivaldi-related photos.

The book is the third by Fish published by Apple’s iBookstore.

Hellstern selects October Heroes

Hellstern Middle School in Springdale recently announced its Heroes of the Month for October.

Sixth-grade heroes include Cole Bowen of the Legends group, Ivan Guitierrez-Resendiz of the Olympians, Mercy Paul of the All Stars, Montana Ponder from Mrs. Kirk’s class, Jeremy Grindstaff of the Defenders and Tyler Ford of the Avengers.

Seventh-grade heroes are Malak Bayyari of the Titans, Madison Stanley from the Champions, Carly Day from the Explorers and Dwayne Byrd of the Patriots.

Cellers earns scholarship

Gretchen Cellers, a student at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, has received the Rob Jordan PTA Scholarship to help complete her degree as a physical therapy assistant.

The scholarship, funded by NWACC academic adviser Sarah Beth Phillips and named for her physical therapist, provides a $1,500 scholarship for a student in the physical therapy assistant program. The award was presented to Cellers during a surprise ceremony Oct. 8.

Western Grove grad earns Drewry award

Lauren Bower of Western Grove has received the Drewry Scholarship to attend North Arkansas College in Harrison.

A graduate of Western Grove High School, Bower is the daughter of Billy and Linda Bower. She was valedictorian of her class at Western Grove, with a 4.0 grade-point average, and also earned an ACT Scholarship.

Bower will major in business management with the goal of owning her own business one day. She plans to get her associate degree at the college before taking online classes to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Girshner honored as choral director

LeAnn Girshner, choir director at Woodland Junior High School in Fayetteville, has been named 2013 Distinguished Junior High Choral Director for the Northwest Region of the Arkansas Choral Directors Association.

Girshner joined the Fayetteville School District in August 2005.

Professor gives book to library

NorthWest Arkansas Community College professor and author Susan Holmes recently donated a copy of her new book, “Deadly Ties: A Waterside Kennels Mystery,” to the NWACC Library.

Holmes presented the book after the discussion, “Blueprint for Murder: Writing a Mystery Novel,” on Oct. 25 at the library.

The book is the first in the Waterside Kennels Mystery Series, which tells of family, friendship and betrayal in the Ozarks.
