Agencies assist with shelter, food, education

As we do every year, NWA Media has invited the nonprofit organizations that help our community all year to ask for help in return.

Their wish lists will appear in the Our Town section every Thursday through Christmas.

NWA Women’s Shelter

What: The Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter is committed to serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and empowering them to build lives free of violence. The agency provides a 24-hour crisis phone line, emergency shelter, support services, court advocacy, children’s advocacy and programming, community education and outreach services in Northwest Arkansas.

Wish List: Shampoo/conditioner, body wash, hair brushes,women’s pajama pants/shorts, grocery gift cards for perishable food, size 3-5 diapers, women’s size 4-6 underwear, feminine health/hygiene products, women’s low or no show socks, slippers, children’s pajamas, hair products, heating pads, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, ozark regional transit bus passes, canned food (especially soups and beans), dry pastas and laundry detergent.

Restoration Village

What: Restoration Village provides long-term free housing to women and women with children in crisis. The organization helps with immediate food and clothing needs; advocacy and guidance to develop a goal plan to progress toward independent living and development of life skills; connections with community resources for other needs; and support groups and counseling.

Wish List: Walmart gift cards for resident needs for gasoline or prescriptions; department store gift cards to be used for Christmas and birthday gifts for the women and the children; new copy machine (Brother® MFC-9340CDW Color LED All-In-One Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax); new resident computer, Windows 7 or Windows 8 desktop for multi-resident use.

Literacy Council of Benton County

What: Founded in 1972, the nonprofit, volunteer-based organization increases adult English literacy by developing volunteer tutors to teach students.

The council has begun to offer student sponsorships, which cover the $250 cost of tutoring for an adult student.

Wish List: HP940 ink cartridges, copy paper, pencils, spiral notebooks, coffee and gently used books for the used book store. Monetary donations may be made by calling the office. The council is also in need of volunteers to become tutors. Cooperative Emergency Outreach

What: Cooperative Emergency Outreach was established in 1991 to provide emergency support for people in south Washington County, from the Northwest Arkansas Mall south to the Crawford County line.

Support includes assistance with rent, utilities, prescriptions, gasoline and clothing, as well as food. Last year food was provided to approximately 10,000 people, and almost $200,000 was distributed in financial assistance. Volunteers provide 100 percent of CEO’s services.

Wish List: Monetary contributions toward the new building are a primary need, so that program funds are not diverted to pay building expenses. Food items that are especially needed are canned meat, canned fruit, cereal, peanut butter and jelly.
