Lewis Handles Responsibilities

— Morgan Lewis doesn’t view himself as a quarterback of the Farmington offensive line. But Cardinals coaches know that without Lewis leading the way, offensive success wouldn’t be possible.

“Morgan is the guy a lot of times this year calling our plays,” Farmington coach Mike Adams said. “I mean he’s calling plays, and against certain teams we’ll get the huddle and he’ll direct us as to which way we’re going to go.

“He’s so good at knowing where we want to attack, and that’s one less thing we have to put on our quarterback.”

Lewis, a 6-foot-2, 255-pound junior, is in his second year as a starter on the offensive line. But unlike last year when his intelligence got him through the season, the Cardinals’ center has now added plenty of strength.

“It’s a big diff erence from last year,” Lewis said. “I’m bigger this year and I just have more of that exeprience.”

Farmington (6-3-1) visits Ashdown (8-2) in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday. For the Cardinals to have success against the Panthers, Lewis knows the offensive — and the offensive line, in particular — must have a big night.

“We’ve got to get a push,” Lewis said. “The off ensive line, we’re a unit that works together and we have to be able to move them around.”

Lewis doesn’t necessarily model his game around one certain center in football. But like a Travis Swanson at Arkansas, his main desire is the lead the Farmington offense in the best way possible.

“I try to be like a lot of guys, but not any one specifically,” Lewis said. “I just want to be the an elite player and be better than the guy across from me. That’s my main goal.”

The Cardinals off ense has been up and down at times throughout this season. But Adams believes Lewis and the other offensive linemen have been consistent throughout.

“When we struggle off ensively it’s usually been our skill guys not making plays,” Adams said. “Those guys on the line have done a good job.”

Lewis knows Farmington will have to be at its best to win Friday. But he’s also confident the Cardinals aren’t done yet. “We just have to click,” Once we final get to clicking, we’ll be able to go far in the playoffs and everything.”
