Police pursuit ends in death

A vehicle pursuit involving Rogers police officers ended early Friday morning with the driver dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, according to a news release from the Rogers Police Department.

The incident began at 2:09 a.m. Friday when a police officer checked out a grey 1993 Toyota pickup at the north end of Lake Atalanta Park near the Arkansas 12 entrance, the press release states.

The officer reported the vehicle fled the scene just after he made contact and the vehicle fled east on Arkansas 12 driving at speeds ranging from 10-50 miles per hour, according to the press release. The pursuit continued to the area just east of the Arkansas 12 Bridge near Heritage Bay Road and ended when the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road, the press release states.

According to the news release, officers reported hearing a gun shot from within the vehicle and returned fire. The truck rolled off the road and came to a stop near the shoulder of the road, the press release states.

The driver was found in the vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted and fatal gunshot wound, according to the news release.

The driver's name was not released.

Rogers police, along with the Benton County Sheriff's Office and Arkansas State Police are investigating the shooting.
