Retirement party

will honor Malone

A retirement reception is planned for Lola Malone from 2-4 p.m. Sundayat the John Tyson Elementary School cafeteria in Springdale.

Malone has been the principal at John Tyson Elementary School for 27 years. Prior to that, she was a teacher and then a principal in theRogers School District.

Malone has served as an educator for 41 and a half years.

Former students, parents, fellow educators and friends are invited to drop in at any time during the reception.

Teachers awarded scholarships, grants

Five area teachers have been awarded scholarships or grants from the Arkansas State Teachers Association. The teachers, from Fayetteville and Gravette, will use the funds for continuing education or to purchase classroom supplies.

Kim Brunkhardt, a sixthgrade English teacher at Gravette Middle School, received a scholarship to pursue her master’s degree in reading at the University of Arkansas. Brunkhardt hopes to attain her reading specialist licensure with the funds.

Kristian Cartwright, a teacher at Woodland Junior High School in Fayetteville, has received a grant to purchase classroom and competition robotics kits. The kits teach engineering, robotics and design basics leading up to a semester-ending competition.

Abigail Cearlock, a teacher at Holcomb Elementary School in Fayetteville, earned a scholarship to fund a master’s degree in education leadership.

Cheryl Macumber, a teacher at Leverett Elementary School in Fayetteville, received a scholarship to study Arkansas history.

The classes will allow Macumber to obtain a permanent teaching license.

Michelle Miller, who teaches AP Calculus and Algebra II at Fayetteville High School, won a scholarship to pursue principal certification.

Teacher Corps names fellows

The Arkansas Teacher Corps at the University of Arkansas announced its first fellowship recipients at a reception in Little Rock on May 21.

The program places teachers in high-need districts in central and southern Arkansas. Corps members must go through six weeks of intensive training this summer before they begin teaching in the fall.

Six of the 21 recipients have local ties.

Jordan Holtby of Harrison earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville in 2012.

Sara Osuna of Springdale earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the UA this year.

Adam Sweatman of Van Buren earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the UA this year.

Candace Taylor of Dardanelle received a bachelor’s degree in history from the UA in 2011.

Lindsey Trahan of Huntsville earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the UA this year.

Kathryn Ward of Pea Ridge received a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Arkansas Tech this year.

Dean commended for innovation

Ben Aldama, dean of adult education at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, has received the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in Community College.

The award celebrates excellence in teaching.

Aldama was honored by the NWACC Board of Trustees at a meeting May 13. He has served NWACC since 2002.

Students receive LSU scholarships

Five Northwest Arkansas students have earned scholarships from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, La. The school handed out more than $205,000 in scholarships and awards at its annual banquet May 3.

Ashley Redo of Alma, Catherine Breeland of Fayetteville and Garrott Van Bebber of Springdale won Arkansas Veterinary Medical Foundation Scholarships. Chelsea Baxley of Farmington took home the Opal Christiansen Memorial Scholarship and the Zoetis Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship.

Catherine Chambers of Fayetteville took home the Nestle Purina Award for Excellence in Companion Animal Nutrition.

Roberts earns scholarship

Katlyn Roberts of Omaha has received an ACT Scholarshipto study at North Arkansas College in Harrison this fall. Roberts, a senior at Omaha High School, is the daughter of Phillip and Sandra Roberts.

She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, EAST, Honor Roll, BETA Club and Gifted and Talented. She has yet to decide on a major.

Canion receives scholarship

Brittany Canion of Huntsville has earned a PresidentialScholarship to attend North Arkansas College in Harrison this fall. She is a senior at Huntsville High School and the daughter of Darrell andRebecca Canion.

Canion served as Future Farmers of America treasurer and was a letterman in both cheerleading and as baseball manager. She plans to major in business.

Academy cites students, faculty

The Academy of the Arts at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith honored students and faculty at the group’s endof-the-year awards ceremony.

Students Alexa Meyers and Christian Parker, both of Fort Smith were recognized for long-term participation in the academy. Each student has participated in Academy of the Arts activities since the program began.

Meyers is the daughter of Samuel and Kimberlee Meyers of Fort Smith. She is a 10th-grade student at Fort Smith Southside High School.

Parker is the son of Kyle and Renee Parker of Fort Smith. He is an eighth grader at Chaffin Junior High in Fort Smith.

AliceBrooks Sanders of Shawnee, Okla., was honored for her service as an academy faculty member.

Eight students also received special recognition for participating in the academy for more than five years. Students who earned their six-year recognition are Delaney Wells, an 11th-grade student at Charleston High School;

Elena Guerra, a seventh grader at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith; Arman Hemmati, a junior at Southside High School; Greyson Meyers, a sixth grader at Christ the King Catholic School in Fort Smith;

Rylee Norton, a sixth-grade student at Immaculate Conception School in Fort Smith; Mallory Rush,a 10th-grade student at Southside High School;

and Alexandra Salamone, an eight grader at Chaffin Junior High.

Francesca Rossi, a sixth grader at Immaculate Conception School, earned a five-year award.

Fike receives

ACT scholarship

Caleb Fike of Harrison has been awarded an ACTScholarship to study at North Arkansas College in the fall. A senior at Bergman High School, he is the son of Allen and Brea Poyner.

Fike plans to major in childhood education and would like to become a high school biology teacher.
