100 YEARS AGO May 30, 1913

An ordinance recently passed by the City Council which prohibits drivers of motor cars from using their cut-outs without a muffler hereafter will be enforced rigidly, and all persons found violating the ordinance, will upon conviction, be fined, according to an announcement made by Police Judge Fred A. Isgrig in Police Court yesterday morning. Numerous complaints recently have been received by the police from guests of the downtown hotels, who declare they cannot sleep for the noise made by automobilists, who when driving use the cut-outs without mufflers.Chief of Police Fred M. Cogswell has instructed the police to arrest all persons who are found running their machines without mufflers, or with the cutouts open.

50 YEARS AGO May 30, 1963

In Newport this week “Willie,” a Razorback hog weighing about 100 pounds, caused a midnight commotion. Pranksters released “Willie” from his pen at a downtown appliance store where he was kept as part of a sales promotion. The hog, chased by Patrolman Bob Rush and bystanders who gave out with Razorback yells,scooted around the streets about 10 minutes before he was captured.

25 YEARS AGO May 30, 1988

A planned public television documentary on the growing nationwide need for quality child care will include film footage from Arkansas. A three-member film crew from Photosynthesis Productions Inc. of Ithaca, N.Y., arrived in Arkansas on May 17 for eight days of filming. While in Arkansas, they visited several day-care centers, interviewed Gov. Bill Clinton and spent parts of six days with a North Little Rock family with two young children.

The School Board for the Pulaski County Special School District decided Thursday that it won’t allow Jacksonville area residents to form their own public school system without a fight. Publicly silent for months on the proposal that has been gathering steam since 2001, the board broke its silence by voting 6-1 at a special meeting to formally oppose a petition pending before the Arkansas Board of Education to carve a new 6,500-student Northeast Pulaski County School District out of the existing Pulaski County district.
