The Arkansas men’s golf team fired a 6-over-par 286 on Tuesday and is tied for 14th place after the opening round of the NCAA Championships at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Alpharetta, Ga.

The Razorbacks continued their season-long trend of starting slow, which left them 16 shots behind first-round leader Arizona State (10 under), which leads host Georgia Tech by four strokes on the par-70, 7,319-yard layout. Heavily favored California is in fifth place, behind Alabama (5 under) and Illinois (4 under).

The 30 teams will compete in 54 holes of stroke play over three days before the field is cut to eight teams and seeded for three rounds of match play to determine the national champion.

Arkansas tied for fourth among SEC teams behind Alabama, Texas A&M (5 over) and LSU (5 over). Junior Sebastian Cappelen and freshman Nicolas Echavarria led the Razorbacks with even-par 70s, while junior Austin Cook and sophomore Thomas Sorensen both had 3-over 73s. Freshman Taylor Moore had the Hogs’ dropped score at 4 over.

The Razorbacks will tee off today in five groups beginning at 7:50 a.m. from the No. 1 hole with playing partners Georgia Tech and TCU.
