FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas and Texas Tech will play a two-year football series beginning in 2014, the programs announced Wednesday.

The series, which was reported last month, will be played at the Red Raiders' home in Lubbock on Sept. 13, 2014 and returned to Fayetteville on Sept. 19, 2015. It will be the first time the former Southwest Conference foes have played since Arkansas left the league following the 1991 season.

“The addition of Texas Tech gives us a quality non-conference opponent for the first two years when the world of college football changes with the playoffs in 2014,” Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said. “We anticipate strength of schedule being a factor in deciding which teams are selected and feel adding Texas Tech to our already strong conference schedule puts us in a great position in that regard. There is a tremendous amount of excitement around our program, and this is a matchup our fans can look forward to.”

The series against Texas Tech adds to an Arkansas schedule heavy with Lonestar State opponents in coming years. The Razorbacks have a two-year series against TCU set for 2016 and 2017, and a home game against Texas scheduled for 2021.

In addition, Arkansas will also play SEC foe Texas A&M at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas from 2014-2024. The Red Raiders will be the fourth former SWC team the Razorbacks have played since leaving the conference. Arkansas went 28-7 against Texas Tech while conference rivals.

"We are thrilled to begin a home-and-home series with the University of Arkansas," Texas Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said. "Texas Tech and Arkansas had many memorable games while conference foes in the Southwest Conference, so this should be very exciting for the fans. We feel like we will be placing ourselves in great position as we kickoff the College Football Playoff era in 2014, with a nonconference opponent the caliber of Arkansas and a challenging Big 12 schedule."

The Razorbacks also have a two-year nonconference series scheduled against Michigan beginning in 2018. Arkansas has had to scramble to schedule marquee nonconference opponents since Texas A&M joined the SEC last year. The two programs had previously been scheduled to play every year in the Dallas suburb from 2008-2017.

Arkansas will travel to Rutgers in September for the second game in a two-year series against the Scarlet Knights.
