Reymond Fuentes provided all of the scoring for the San Antonio Missions in a 2-1 victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals before an announced crowd of 3,302 fans Monday afternoon at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium in San Antonio.
Fuentes scored the winning run on Johan Limonta’s two-out base hit in the ninth inning and hit a home run in the sixth inning.
Naturals reliever Jon Keck walked Fuentes to open the ninth inning, and Rico Noel’s sacrifice bunt moved Fuentes to second. After Everett Williams struck out, Keck intentionally walked Kalian Sams to set up a double play, but Fuentes stole third and scored on Limonta’s single up the middle.
Fuentes’ home run on the first pitch from Naturals starter Yordano Ventura with two out in the sixth inning tied the game at 1-1.
The Naturals took a 1-0 lead in the third when Brett Eibner walked, moved to second on Orlando Calixte’s groundout and scored on Rey Navarro’s double.
Both teams had five hits, but no player managed more than one. The Naturals went 3 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. The Missions went 1 for 2 with runners in scoring position and left four on base.
Keck (0-1) took the loss after Ventura gave up 1 run on4 hits with 8 strikeouts over 8 innings. Kevin Quackenbush (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the victory. Missions starter Keyvius Sampson allowed 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 9 and walking 2 in 7 innings while throwing 94 pitches.
