Reporting on Petrino wins staff a first-place

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette staff won a first place Green Eyeshade Award in sports reporting for its coverage of the motorcycle crash and subsequent firing of University of Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino in 2012.

Photographer Benjamin Krain received two first-place citations: in spot news for a picture of firefighters battling a house engulfed in flame and in feature photography for an image from last year’s Color Run race in which runners pass through a cloud of colored powder at the finish line.

Editorial page editor Paul Greenberg placed second and columnist John Brummett placed third in the serious-commentary category.Greenberg also placed second in the editorials category.

Stephen B. Thornton placed second in the sports photography category.

The Green Eyeshade Awards, in its 63rd year, is a regional journalism competition that draws entrants from 11 southeastern states. It is sponsored by regional directors of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s oldest and largest journalism organization.

The winners, announced earlier this month, were chosen from among more than 400 entries from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
