Fire breaks out aboard Royal Caribbean cruise ship

BALTIMORE — A fire broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship en route to the Bahamas, and a passenger says he was awakened in his cabin by a crew member who told him to grab his flotation device.

Mark J. Ormesher said in an email Monday that the Grandeur of the Seas crew member told him and his girlfriend that it wasn't a drill. Ormesher says he smelled acrid smoke.

Ormesher posted about the event on Facebook and emailed details to The Associated Press.

Royal Caribbean says the fire occurred on the mooring area of deck 3 about 2:15 a.m. Monday and was quickly extinguished. Passengers and crew members reported to evacuation stations. No injuries were reported.

The ship had sailed from Baltimore on Friday. It has arrived in Freeport, Bahamas.
