TRACK AND FIELD UA men load up for nationals with 20 entries

The Arkansas men’s team will have 20 entries spread among 17 athletes and two relay teams and the women’s team will have 11 entries among nine athlete and one relay team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Tarik Batchelor qualified in two events, the long jump and the triple jump, at the NCAA West Preliminary meet, which wrapped up Saturday night in Austin, Texas. Batchelor finished third in the long jump with a leap of 25 feet, 8 inches and second in the triple jump with a leap of 53-0 to move on to the national meet.

Jarrion Lawson led all qualifiers in the long jump with a leap of 26-0.25 to advance to the national championship meet, and Raymond Higgs jumped 25-6.25 to finish sixth among qualifiers.

Arkansas will send four runners in the 800. Leoman Momoh was second among qualifiers with a time of 1 minute, 48.18 seconds, while Patrick Rono (1:46.49) qualified fourth, Anthony Lieghio (1:48.74) qualified 10th and Tomas Squella (1:49.49) qualified 11th.

Anthony May led all qualifiers in the high jump with a leap of 7-1, while Dwayne Golbek also advanced by clearing 6-11.5 to finished 11th among qualifiers.

Andrew Irvin cleared 17-08.50 in the pole vault to finish fourth among qualifiers.

Kemoy Campbell qualified third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:45.85, and Soloman Haile advanced in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:55.59, which was good for second. Stanley Kebenei qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by finishing second in 8:36.08.

Akheem Gauntlett was eighth among qualifiers in the 400 meters with a time of 46.45, and Caleb Cross advanced in the 400 hurdles by finishing seventh in 50.14.

Kevin Lazas and Nathanel Franks also advanced to nationals in the decathlon, and Arkansas’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams also advanced.

Makeba Alcide led the women’s team, qualifying in the heptathlon and the high jump. Alcide cleared 5-10.5 in the high jump and finished second among qualifiers.

Sparkle McKnight and Gwedolyn Flowers advanced in the 400-meter hurdles, with McKnight finishing fifth in 56.95 and Flowers finishing 10th in 57.88.

Regina George qualified second in the 400 meters in 51.00. Stephanie Brown qualified second in the 1,500 in 4:17.18, Semehar Tesfaye moved on in the 10,000 meters in 35:03.05 and Grace Heymsfield finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:02.23.

Tamara Myers qualified seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 42-9.5, and Kirsten Hesseltine cleared 5-8.75 in the high jump to finish tied for ninth among qualifiers.

Arkansas’ women’s 1,600-meter relay team also moved on to the national meet with a qualifying time of 3:31.61.

HIGH SCHOOL Central Arkansas All-Star games set

The Central Arkansas All-Star Classic is scheduled for Friday at Curran-Conway Field in Little Rock. The first pitch for the baseball doubleheader featuring high school seniors is set for 6 p.m.

Baseball/softball statistics wanted

High school baseball and softball coaches are encouraged to send in their final statistics for the 2013 season to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Offensive statistics needed include: At-bats, hits, batting average, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI and stolen bases.
