Military honors Arkansas employers

The Arkansas employers named state semifinalists for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award are the Gravette Public School District, Littlefield Co. of Fort Smith and Windstream Communications of Little Rock. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defense’s highest honor for employers who provide extraordinary support to their Guard and Reserve employees. This year, 138 semifinalists were selected from 2,899 employers nominated.

Employers selected as semifinalists assist Guard and Reserve employees through formal and informal initiatives, including setting veteran hiring goals, establishing military employee liaisons, providing childcare for deployed employees, arranging care package drives and granting additional leave for military employees and family members before and after deployments.

LPGA Women’s Day set to tee off

The Network of Executive Women Northwest Arkansas kicks off Women’s Day at the LPGA with its third annual Executive Networking Breakfast 7:30-9:30 a.m.

June 20 at John Q. Hammons Convention Center, 3300 Pinnacle Hills Parkway, Rogers. Introductions begin at 8 a.m.

Rosalind Brewer, president and chief executive officer of Sam’s Club, and Linda Cohn, anchor for ESPN’s SportsCenter, will lead a discussion on “finding your place as a woman in a man’s world.”

Registration is $35 per person. No walk-ins will be accepted at the door.

Women’s Day at the LPGA, sponsored by Kimberly-Clark, is an official event of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship LPGA tournament, featuring 144 of the top female golfers in the world.

UA team earns business-plan award

HomeDx, a University of Arkansas business team providing over-the-counter in-vitro diagnostic tests, placed second at the graduate level in the Donald W.

Reynolds Tri-State Award business-plan competition in Las Vegas.Second-place winners received a $20,000 prize, team trophy and individual plaques. Winning $30,000 in the graduate level was a team from Oklahoma State University.

HomeDx is a quick-response test to be sold to consumers through retail channels for diagnosing food intolerances, sexually transmitted diseases and other infections.

The team of Calvin Smith, Will Swearingen, Max Mahler, Daniel Cherry and Audra Mazzeo also took home the $2,000 prize as graduate winner of the Elevator Pitch Competition.

The Tri-State Award event invites the first- and second-place winners of the Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup in Arkansas, Nevada and Oklahoma, the states in which Reynolds built his media companies.

Center to offer summer GED classes

The Adult Education Center at Northwest Technical Institute in Springdale will continue to offer Arkansas General Educational Development diploma preparation 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday throughout the summer.

Evening classes will also be offered through June 13, to resume Aug. 20.

New and current students may study free at the center on a personal GED plan with certified instructors.

Microsoft Office Certification and English-as-a-Second-Language training opportunities will also be available on a limited basis.
