Summer camp

starts Tuesday

The Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA is encouraging parents to help keep their kids physically active and mentally engaged by signing them up for the Y’s Day Camp Tuesday through Aug. 12. Summer is a critical out-of-school time when children and teens can benefit from enriched learning, new experiences and making new friendships. Parents can pick and choose the weeks their children attend throughout the summer. Day Camp provides exciting and educational camp programming for children and their parents, such as Camp Kick-Off, All Stars Sports Week, Color War Week, Mad Scientist Week. To ensure that all youth have the chance to experience camp, the NWA Mercy Family YMCA offers financial assistance to those in need.

‘It’s A Baby Affair’

teaches health

In Arkansas, a baby dies before its first birthday almost every day. Minority babies are twice as likely to die before reaching their first birthday. Members of four sororities across the state have joined to form Sisters United in an effort to reduce this trend and decrease infant mortality in Arkansas.

As a way of generating awareness of infant mortality prevention, Northwest Arkansas Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a public service sorority, is hosting “It’s A Baby Affair” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Springdale Holiday Inn. This is a free event welcoming all parents, grandparents and caregivers of infants up to 1 year old.

Area professionals will demonstrate strategies and methods. Translators, literature, snacks, door prizes, and question and answer opportunities will be provided.
