Accidents leave 4 dead

Four people died last week after accidents on state roads, according to preliminary Arkansas State Police fatality accident reports.

Madge Finch, 88, of Eagle Rock, Mo., Ann Zgiet, 70, of St. Ann, Mo., Makayla Hawkins, 7, of Helena-West Helena, and Mason Faver, 14, of Little Rock, died of their injuries.

Shortly after 1 p.m. May 10, Katrina Bouchard drove north on 1253 Arkansas 143 in Carroll County in a 2007 Chrysler. She veered off the road and struck a tree, state police said.

Bouchard, 46, and Finch, a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., state police said. Finch died about 8 a.m. Wednesday, state police said.

About 3 p.m. May 12, Zgiet drove south on Arkansas 43, less than a mile north of Ponca in Newton County, in a 2005 Jeep when she veered off the road, the report states. Zgiet tried to get back on the road, but lost control, sliding across opposite lanes of the highway and off the other side of theroad, state police said.

The Jeep fell into an embankment, crossing a ditch and hitting a bluff before it overturned, state police said. Zgiet was taken to Mercy Hospital, where she died of her injuries Monday, the report states.

The third accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday in Helena-West Helena. Hawkins rode her bicycle in the westbound lane of West Park Street, just east of Sam Street, when a westbound 1991 GMC pickup struck her, state police said. Hawkins died of her injuries, and the truck driver Authur English, 71, was uninjured, state police said.

Pulaski County sheriff ’s deputies are searching for a car that struck Faver, a Fuller Middle School student, Thursday, deputies said. About 9 p.m., Faver and a friend were walking on opposite sides of Willow Springs Road when they heard a car approaching, the friend told investigators. The two tried to get out of the street, when the car, which was “traveling at a high rate of speed,” struck Faver, stopped for a moment and sped off, deputies said.
