Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson added his second oral commitment for the 2014 recruiting class when Forrest City forward Trey Thompson orally committed to the Hogs on Thursday morning.

“I felt like it was the right decision,” Thompson said. “It was a tough decision because it was between Arkansas and Memphis. After talking it over with my mom and my family, it was the right decision. It’s my home state, and I felt like Arkansas had a lot to offer. “

Thompson, 6-9, 250 pounds, chose Arkansas over scholarship offers from Memphis, Florida, Mississippi State and others. He averaged about 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 block shots and 3 assists this past season.

He said Anderson likes his versatility.

“I can step out 15 to 17 feet,” said Thompson, who is rated a three-star recruit and the No. 21 center in the nation by ESPN. “I can pass the ball well and post up.”

Thompson, who plays for Arkansas Hawks during the spring and summer, has a huge upside, according to Hawks Coach Bill Ingram.

“He has a good skill level and a great basketball IQ, and his ceiling is off the charts,” Ingram said. “He’s going to be one of those guys you see in college and say, ‘Wow, he didn’t look like anything like that in high school’ because he’s going to get on a weight program.”.

Thompson said Anderson was thrilled to hear he was joining the Razorbacks.

“He offered me a scholarship when I was a ninth-grader and I was really immature,” Thompson said. “I’ve matured over the last two years. He wants to keep the best players in the state, and I feel like I’m one of the best players in the state and in the country. “

Oral commitments are nonbinding.
