Inlow turns 90 on May 30

Freda Evelyn Inlow will celebrate her 90th birthday onMay 30. Her family will host a party for her from 2-4 p.m. June 1 at the Cave Springs Community Building.

Inlow was born May 30, 1923, in Frisco. She has lived on a family farm near Healing Springs since1944, when she married her late husband, Robert Inlow.

The Inlows had two children - Charles, who died in 2009, and Carol, who lives in Healing Springs. After her husband’s death in 1979, Inlow retired and continued raising cattle until she broke her hip nine years ago.

Inlow enjoys gardening and sharing the vegetables she grows with neighbors. Family and friends are invited to attend her birthday party.

Canfield receives

Eagle Scout honors

Michael Canfield, 18, of Elkins has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Canfieldis a member of Troop 95, which meets at the Presbyterian Church of West Fork.

He is the son of Melissa Canfield and David and Becky Canfield. Canfield says he has wanted to be anEagle Scout from the time he first learned about scouting when he was in kindergarten.

For his Eagle Scout project, Canfield refurbished the stage at Bunch Park in Elkins. The project included replacing the supports, repainting the stage, adding a safety railing and replacing the steps.

Nursing student to travel abroad

Fayetteville High School graduate Alexandra “Alex” Smith willtravel to Australia at the end of May to participate in the International Scholars Laureate Program’s Delegation on Nursing.

Smith recently graduated with a degree in nursing from Pulaski Technical College in North LittleRock. Her degree includes a minor in American sign language interpretation.

Smith served as Eastern District vice president for Phi Thea Kappa Honor Society over the past year.

In Australia, Smith will learn about aboriginal medicine and midwifery.

Local FBLA cited for fundraising

The students in Washington Junior High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America raised the most money in their division for Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Students recycled unused electronics to earn money for the fundraiser. The group has been raising money for local charities since 2001.

Pliler to retire

from university

Betty Pliler, a 29-year employee of the registrar’soffice at the University of Arkansas, has announced her retirement. A reception in her honor is planned for 3-4:30 p.m.

today in the Tour Room on the second floor of Silas Hunt Hall.

Pliler joined the office of the registrar staff in 1984.

For the last 10 years, she has assisted with graduation applications and the degree-clearance process.

During the 10-year period, she has helped post degrees and mail diplomas to more than 40,000 UA students.

applaud faculty

The Associated Student Government and Residents’ Interhall Congress at the University of Arkansas selected three faculty members to receive the Outstanding Faculty Member Award for the 2012-13 academic year.

Faculty award winners are Curt Rom, director of the Bumpers College honors program and a professor of horticulture;

Susan E.

Bristow, an information systems instructor in the Sam Walton College of Business;

and Carleton Holt, an associate professor of educationalleadership in the College of Education and Health Professions.

Nineteen faculty members were nominatedand recognized at the annual Faculty Appreciation Banquet.

Alumni group

honors seniors

University of Arkansas graduating seniors Katie McGehee of Ozark and Clint Shoemake of Bartlesville, Okla., were awarded2013 Senior Honors Citations from the Arkansas Alumni Association during the group’s Board of Directors luncheon May 10.

The citations honor a male and female senior who exhibit outstanding academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership. The citation comes with a personal memento, a $500 cash award, a lifetime membership to the Arkansas Alumni Association and recognition on the student honor wall at the Janelle Y.

McGehee is a UA alumni-endowed scholar and a Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences scholarshiprecipient. She received her degree in poultry science with a minor in environmental, soil and water sciences.

Shoemake is a Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellow with the U.S. Department of State who has studied abroad in Tanzania, India and Ghana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and political science.

Covington wins P.E.O. scholarship

Madison Elizabeth Covington, a senior at Siloam Springs High School, is the winner of the P.E.O. STARScholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. Covington received the award during a ceremony at her high school.

Covington has been accepted atthe University of Arkansas, where she plans to study international relations. She is the daughter of Bill and Cindy Covington.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship carries a $2,500award and is given based on leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.

Nontraditional students honored

Zach Henderson of Fayetteville and Hanna Cline of Kingston are the 2013 recipients of the Arkansas Alumni Association’s Nontraditional Student Leadership Awards.

The award recognizes non-traditional undergraduate students for their academic excellence. Henderson and Cline received $500 checks and commemorative clocks during the Student Leader Awards event in April.

Henderson finished his bachelor’s degree in English this year. Cline is a freshman pre-veterinarian major.
