Jacob Holly murder trial delayed

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

The trial of a Rogers man charged in connection with second-degree murder and first-degree battery in connection with a double stabbing under an Elkins bridge has been delayed again.

The charges stem from an altercation between Jacob Michael Holly, 27, and Chris Kelley, 44, of Elkins, and Kelley’s son, Shawn Kelley, 22.

Holly was set for trial Wednesday in Washington County Circuit Court before Judge Mark Lindsay but the trial was delayed because an attorney is ill.

The trial was reset to begin July 1. Three days are scheduled for the case.

The case was previously delayed because the sides were waiting on evidence from the state crime lab.

Police and prosecutors are unsure exactly what happened under the White River bridge on Arkansas 74, but Chris Kelley died of stab wounds and Shawn Kelley was injured.

Holly and the Kelleys apparently arrived at the bridge separately. Police said the men knew each other, but they didn’t know what started the fight.

Deputies received a report of a stabbing just before 10 p.m. July 14. Police said Holly went onto the highway and flagged down a motorist.

According to a preliminary arrest report, Holly admitted to stabbing both men.

Police believe alcohol was involved.

Chris Kelley’s body was found in the river the following day. Sheriff ’s Office deputies also recovered a knife.

Second-degree murder is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Holly is free on $100,000 bond while awaiting trial.
