Highway district moves to Barling

The state Highway and Transportation Department has moved its District 4 offices from Fort Smith into a new complex in Barling.

The move to 808 Frontier Road at Chaffee Crossing was completed Friday, according to a news release from the Highway Department.

In addition to the district’s administrative offices, the complex will accommodate the resident engineer’s office, district materials laboratory, area maintenance headquarters, facilities for several district maintenance and bridge inspection crews, and the Arkansas Highway Police District 3 commander, the release stated.

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority gave the deed for about 40 acres at Chaffee Crossing to the department in 2002 for the complex.

Construction work began in 2007 and included site preparation, fencing and three contracts to build the center. The total cost was $13.5 million, the release stated.

The department moved to the Chaffee Crossing location from its center at 4019 Towson Ave. in Fort Smith where the district had its headquarters since 1959.

District 4 is composed of Crawford, Franklin, Logan, Polk, Scott, Sebastian and Washington counties.
