Index: Economy to gain in health

Housing starts, job gains boost future prospects for U.S.

Workers put together a building in Piscataway, N.J., last month. The Conference Board said Friday that its April index of leading indicators increased 0.6 percent last month after a dip in March.

A measure of the U.S. economy’s future health rose solidly in April, buoyed by a sharp rise in applications to build homes and a better job market.
