Spring Fling helps create opportunities

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Flip-flops, shorts, aloha shirts and straw hats (perhaps even a grass skirt) are all one needs to be properly attired for the 16th annual Spring Fling Luau Saturday to benefit Open Avenues.

The luau will include dinner, live and silent auctions and dancing to live music by Leah and the Mojo Doctors.

Rogers-based Open Avenues serves adults with disabilities and helps its clients live as independently as possible while being active participants in the community at large. The nonprofit organization provides employment and job skills training and job placement services. Life skills training includes classes in laundry, cooking and spending money.

Clients may work at the group’s Work Center doing production jobs such as labeling, collating, mailing operations, packaging and assembly or disassembly for area businesses. Partner businesses include Outdoor Cap, Walmart, Ring Snuggies, Whistler Group, Kennametal, Ironwood Shredding and Waste Management.

Sandie and Rollin Ford, Walmart chief administrative officer, are this year’s honorary chairmen for the fundraiser.
