Hernandez published in national magazine

Maria Leticia Hernandez of Fayetteville, a student at Fayetteville AdultEducation, has been published in the national magazine The Change Agent. Hernandez’s article was titled “Humans, Not Machines.”

The Change Agent is a national magazine dedicated to adulteducation and social justice. The magazine is published twice yearly.

Springdale alumni meet on June 29

All alumni of Springdale High School are invited to a class reunion from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

June 29 at the Springdale Senior Center, corner of Meadow and Park streets in Springdale. Lunch will be served at noon.

memorial service

Douglas Cemetery near Highfill will host a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. May 26. The cemetery is located on Douglas Cemetery Road off Arkansas 264 west.

Cemetery association

plans May 25 picnic

The annual meeting and picnic of the Seligman New Salem Cemetery Association will be held May 25. The business meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at the New Salem School House, located about 1.5 miles northeast of Seligman, Mo.

A potluck, picnic lunch will be held on the grounds at noon following the business meeting.

Everyone is invited to attend both the meeting and the lunch.

Donations for the maintenance of the cemetery will be gratefully accepted at the meeting or by contacting Karen Roller, the association’s treasurer, at 8999 Farm Road 2240, Washburn, MO 65772.

Wise wins writing contest

Mabel Wise of Rogers won the first grade competition in the Arkansas Educational Television Network PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. Wise was one of 150 kindergarten, first-, second- and third-grade students across the state who participated in this year’s contest.

Other local winners include Navaeh Smith of Springdale, who finished third in the kindergarten category for “Rainey Nights”;

Mallory Price of Rogers, who finished third in the first-grade category for “A Cat Party”; and Viviana Preston of Booneville, who finished third among second graders for “Stretchy Elizabeth.”

School magazine receives award

The 2012 edition of Connotations, the award-winning literary magazine produced by Fayetteville High School students, won the Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association.

The magazine also won the Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The awards are the highest handed out by each organization.

Editors of the 2012 edition were Kaitlyn Hurlbut and Joel Freeman. The magazine’s faculty adviser is Becky Cox.

Martin earns scholarship

Breonna Martin of Harrison has been awarded a PresidentialScholarship to attend North Arkansas College in the fall.

Martin is a senior at Harrison High School and the daughter of Joey Allen and Tammy Martin.

She is a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; Book Club; and Child Development Club and has completed certified nursing assistant and emergency medical technician classes.

Martin plans to major in nursing. She hopes to become a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics.

Phi Beta Kappa inducts members

Five Northwest Arkansas students were among 32 inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s Beta chapter April 24 at Hendrix College in Conway. The group, founded in 1776, is the nation’s oldest and largest academic honor society.

Local students inducted were: Emily Ann Deitchler of Eureka Springs, a senior majoring in environmental studies; Nicole Lyman of Fayetteville, a senior majoring in philosophy; Sarah Jane Pearce of Springdale, a senior history major; Johnny Phuong Tran of Fort Smith, a senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology; and Jennifer Lea Vos of Prairie Grove, a senior classics major.

Bentonville girl wins festival title

Megan Ferguson of Bentonville was named Miss Dogwood Festival at the event held earlier this month in Siloam Springs.

Bryce Bennett of Colcord, Okla., won the Miss Teen Dogwood Festival Pageant, while Brynn Cordeiro of Gentry is this year’s Junior Miss Dogwood Festival.

Other pageant winners included Gabbi Bain of Prairie Grove, who won Princess Dogwood Festival; Madison Schluterman of Bentonville who took top honors in the Little Miss Dogwood Festival contest; Zaylee Kaufman of Gentry in the Toddler Miss Dogwood Festival contest; and the new Tiny Miss Dogwood Festival, Miranda Jo Hunt of Siloam Springs.

Essay contest

names winners

Nena Evans won the eighth annual Earth Day Essay Contest at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Students were asked to answer the question “How would you respond to the issue of the planet’s changing climate from a specific critical perspective?”

Evans earned a $400 prize for her essay “ Cultivating Our Changing Climate.”

Elodie Adams took home second prize and $300 for “The Potential of Education in an Ecologically Challenged World.” Third place and $200 went to Matt Carroll for “Our Overheated Earth.”

is Udall Scholar

Andrea Love of Fayetteville has been named a recipient of the 2013 Morris K. Udall Scholarship. The University of Arkansas junior is one of 50 students nationally to receive the award.

Love is an Honors College Fellow who is majoring in environmental, soil and water science at the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. She is also working on a communications degree from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

The Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall Scholarship Foundation awards 50 merit-based scholarships to college juniors and sophomores interested in pursuing careers related to the environment. Each scholarship carries an award of up to $5,000.

Three other UA students - Douglas Wolf of Fayetteville, Kathryn Dunn of Muskogee, Okla., and Emily Alberty of Westville, Okla. - earned honorable mentions.

Students named to Who’s Who

Twenty-one University of the Ozarks students including 10 local students have been recognized by Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2013. Students were recognized based on grade point average, merit and leadership.

Selections were announced at the university’s 2013 Student Leadership Ceremony April 29 in Munger Chapel. Nominations for the publication were made by university faculty and staff.

Northwest Arkansas students selected include Marcus Bobb of Clarksville; Nick Brill of Siloam Springs; Bianca Cea of Siloam Springs; Callie Edwards of Bentonville;

Chelsea Glasscock of Lincoln;

Klusmeier earns

research grant

Fayetteville native Cathryn Klusmeier recently received the Louis B. Perry Summer Research Grant to do collaborative research with a professor at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.

Klusmeier will work with senior lecturer of environmental humanities and general studies Don Show on a book titled “Sustaining Place: The Persistence of the Local in an Era of Globalization.”

Klusmeier, a 2010 Fayetteville High School graduate, is the daughter of Walt and Lisa Klusmeier. She is a rising senior at Whitman College majoring in environmental humanities and philosophy.

Ozarks alumni

receive awards

The Alumni Association at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville honored several graduates during its Alumni Banquet on April 19.

The Rev. Bill Rail and his wife, Maxine, of Rogers received the Alumni Legacy Award given to alumni who give unselfishly to support the university. The Rails are both 1952 graduates of the university.

Johnny Dillard of Lowell, a 1970 graduate, received the Alumni Achievement Award. He is co-founder and president of Central Research. A disabled Vietnam War veteran, Dillard advocates for other disabled service veterans.

The Rev. Jerry Rice of Rogers was given the Alumni Merit Award for his service as first dean of the university chapel, as a former religion professor and as a past president of the Alumni Board of Directors. Rice is a 1953 Ozarks graduate.

Ryan Rose of Fort Smith received the Young Alumni Service Award. Rose, a 2007 graduate, is the pastor and director of church media at Butterfield Assembly of God Church in Van Buren.

He will serve as president of the Alumni Association beginning in July.

WATC students score highest

Zackary McClain of Van Buren and Levi Moore of Subiaco - both students at the Western Arkansas Technology Center at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith - scored highest in the state on the written exams at the Ford AAA Student Auto Skills Competition. The duo also placed third overall in the hands-on part of the competition.

The competition is designed to test students’ knowledge of automotive principals. McClain is a senior at Van Buren High School, while Moore is a senior at Scranton High School.

Castoro named ‘Romance Pioneer’

Laura Parker Castoro, a past president of the Writers Colony at DairyHollow and a member of the group’s board of directors, received two awards at The Romantic Times annual convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Castoro was honored as a “Legend of Romance” and a “Romance Pioneer.” Castoro has published 39 books with major publishing houses over a 31-year career.

Professor’s book

wins gold medal

“A Natural History of the Central Appalachians,” a book writtenby University of Arkansas professor Steven L.

Stephenson, earned the gold medal for top regional non-fiction book at the 2013 Independent Publisher Regional and E-Book Awards.

The book examines the biology and ecology of the Appalachian region as well as the history of humans in the region.

Horn receives ACT Scholarship

Kelsey Horn, a senior at Valley Springs High School, is the recipient of an ACT Scholarship to attend North Arkansas College in Harrison.

She is the daughter of James and Christy Horn.

Horn is a member of the Vally Springs Spanish Club, Art Club and Science Club, and the National Honor Society. She plans to major in speech and would like to become a speech pathologist.
