The Wraptastic For gadgets and gizmos

We try to avoid falling for the lure of “as seen on TV” kitchen products. More often than not the product doesn’t even come close to performing the way the commercials claim and we end up feeling like we wasted our money.

So we were reluctant to try the Wraptastic, a device designed to take the hassle out of cutting plastic wrap, aluminum foil and wax paper. You see, we’ve never struggled with cutting any of those food-friendly wraps.

(Now, as for getting plastic wrap to stick to what we want and not itself, we’d be more than willing to try that gizmo.)

By watching the Wraptastic commercial, you’d think cutting a single piece of plastic wrap to cover a bowl of leftovers is more challenging than giving a cat a bath.

To use it, you remove the roll of plastic wrap or foil from its original packaging and place it inside the Wraptastic, locking the ends in place with spring-loaded caps. Pull out the desired length of foil or plastic, and then press the lid closed. A partially hidden blade does the cutting.

We tested the Wraptastic using plastic wrap. The device required two hands for almost every aspect of the job. We had to hold the Wraptastic in place while we pulled the sheet of plastic across the food (the nonskid base doesn’t compensate for the unbalanced weight), and it required two hands to press the lid closed (one on each end) to get an even cut from the blade.

Speaking of blades, the fact that you can’t see it doesn’t mean you can’t get cut by it.

Bottom line: If you find tearing off sheets of plastic wrap and aluminum foil to be a battle you tend to lose, the Wraptastic may be right for you. For the rest of us, save your money.
