CARDINALS Closer Motte to miss season

CHICAGO - St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte had season-ending elbow surgery Tuesday.

Motte tweeted the ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow “went well.”

“One day closer to getting back out there then yesterday,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Cardinals announced before their game against the Chicago Cubs that they had activated first baseman Matt Adams (right oblique) from the disabled list.

Motte was placed on the Cardinals’ disabled list March 29 with right elbow soreness. After trying to rehab the injury and play catch, the team decided he should have the elbow-ligament replacement procedure.

Motte saved 42 games in 2012 with a 2.75 ERA.

Edward Mujica has taken over as the closer for St. Louis. He has converted all eight of his chances and has a 2.08 ERA.

ROCKIES Tulowitzki out of lineup

DENVER - Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was held out of the Colorado Rockies’ lineup Tuesday night as a precaution after an MRI revealed minor swelling in his left groin.

Tulowitzki missed most of last season with a groin injury that required surgery to remove scar tissue. Rockies athletic trainer Keith Dugger said this injury is in the same area but is unrelated.

Tulowitzki said he thinks he tweaked his left groin lunging for the first base bag in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He then scored from first on Michael Cuddyer’s double.

Tulowitzki missed the Rockies’ next game before playing two over the weekend.

Manager Walt Weiss said Tulowitzki was available to pinch hit against the New York Yankees on Tuesday and he hopes to have him back in the lineup tonight.

RED SOX Hanrahan placed on DL

BOSTON - The Red Sox have placed closer Joel Hanrahan on the disabled list for the second time this season.

Right-hander Allen Webster replaces him on the roster after being recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket.

Hanrahan went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right forearm. He left Monday night’s 11-inning, 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the ninth with forearm tightness.

He was on the disable list from April 14-29 with a strained right hamstring. Andrew Bailey replaced him as closer but went on the disabled list before Monday’s game with a strained right biceps.

Webster is scheduled to start tonight against Minnesota. In one start with Boston this season, he allowed two earned runs in six innings in a 10-inning, 5-4 loss to Kansas City on April 21.

YANKEES Teixeira may practice soon

TAMPA, Fla. - Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said he could be ready to take on-field batting practice for the first time Friday since hurting his right wrist two months ago.

Alex Rodriguez also worked out for the second consecutive day at New York’s complex in Tampa. Teixeira took batting practice indoors, ran and fielded grounders.

Pitcher Ivan Nova, out since late April because of tightness in his right triceps, expects to pitch two innings today in his first extended spring training game.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli, who broke his right hand 11 days ago, said the cast will be removed in three weeks.

Rodriguez is coming back from hip surgery in January. Teixeira was injured on March 5.
