Farmers Market Opens Saturday

SPRINGDALE — The Farmers Market will open Saturday in both locations with a new director.

The market will begin its 16th year with Paula Boles as director. She replaces Jim McGuire, who stepped down after several years managing the market.

The market will open at 7 a.m. at the Jones Center and at Shiloh Square. The Jones Center market is at the end of the Old Missouri Road entrance to the facility. Shiloh Square is between Mill and Spring streets on Emma Avenue.

New this year will be 16 additional vendors joining 35 returning ones. The vendors come from Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington counties.

Additional items available will include bakery goods, bath products and a market cookbook, Boles said. The book, which will cost $5, includes recipes that use items for sale at the market, she said.

In June, U.S. Department of Agriculture-approved frozen pork will be available, Boles said.

The cool weather has delayed some produce items, Boles said. Some that should be available include lettuce, radishes, turnips, beets, carrots and items such as fresh eggs. For those who want their own garden, plants will be available, including pepper, tomato and herbs. Flower bulbs will also be available.

The market’s website, springdalefarmersmarket.org, includes a calendar that lists when produce items are ready for harvest.

The market accepts coupons from the Women Infants and Children and the Senior Farmers Nutrition Program and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program vouchers.

Market officials are trying to find sponsors for its Double Your Dollars program, where people who use coupons and vouchers can receive matching market tokens, Boles said.
