Democrat-Gazette wins top large-daily AP awards

HOT SPRINGS - The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette won sweepstakes and general excellence awards in the larger-daily newspaper division of the 2012 Arkansas Associated Press Managing Editors contest.

The group announced contest winners Saturday at its annual meeting, held this year in Hot Springs. The contest was judged by AP-member editors in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota

The Democrat-Gazette took first place in 18 other categories in the division. Those included an award in the service to the Freedom of Information Act category for a story by reporters Amy Schlesing and Bill Bowden that explored Republican congressional candidate Ken Aden’s claims that he served as a Green Beret; first place in the news coverage category for the staff’s stories about the 2012 election; and first place in the special project-community service category for a series of stories by reporters Chad Day and Cathy Frye about the Phillips County justice system.

Other winners in the larger-newspaper division included The Jonesboro Sun, which won four first-place awards, and the Texarkana Gazette, which one three first-place awards.

The Daily Citizen of Searcy won the sweepstakes and general excellence awards in the smaller-daily newspapers category. Among midsized papers, The Batesville Daily Guard won the sweepstakes and general excellence awards.

Several Democrat-Gazette staff members won multiple awards.

Photographer Benjamin Krain won three first-place awards, including for photographer’s portfolio. The Democrat-Gazette swept that category, with Staton Breidenthal taking second and Stephen Thornton taking third.

Frye and Day also won first place in the spot-news category, and Frye won first place in news features.

Editorial Page Editor Paul Greenberg won first place in hard-news and human-interest column writing.

The Democrat-Gazette won all three awards in the education reporting category, with reporter Cynthia Howell winning first and second place for her coverage of De Queen Elementary School and the state’s adoption of common core curriculum standards.

The newspaper won first and second place in the sports-story category for coverage of Bobby Petrino’s departure as Razorback football coach by reporters Tom Murphy, Tracie Dungan, Chris Branam and Andy Davis.

In the graphics category, designer Kirk Montgomery won first place, and designer Dusty Higgins won second place.

The Democrat-Gazette also won first-place awards for website and page design work by Terry Austin, Stan Denman and Doug Grimsley. SMALLER DAILY NEWSPAPERS
