Alabama’s Steele has ankle surgery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama guard Andrew Steele had surgery on his right ankle.

Crimson Tide Coach Anthony Grant says Steele had a two-hour operation Wednesday to fix several issues, including a stress fracture.

The Tide plays Stanford on Saturday in the second round of the NIT.

Steele had missed the last four games with the injury. He was the only senior on the team.

Grant said he was a mentor for players on a team that mostly relies on underclassmen.

Steele played in 93 career games and started 20. He averaged 20 minutes a game this season but missed seven games in November and December while recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia. The team went 2-5 during that stretch, contributing to its omission from the NCAA Tournament.
