Mills celebrates 97th birthday

Ree Mills of Springdale celebrated her 97th birthday with a week of events.

Mills was born March 17, 1916.

The Springdale Senior Center hosted her first birthday party on March 13. A birthday breakfast hosted by her grandson, Paul Mills of Kansas City, Mo .,and wife Vicki was held the morning of March 16 at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Springdale.

Thirty-five family members attended a birthday dinner March 16 at Western Sizzlin in Springdale.

The dinner was hosted by Mills’ son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Phyllis Mills.

Finally, Mills’ church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, hosted a birthday celebration on her 97th birthday, March 17.

Whitehorn marks 90

Irma Whitehorn will celebrate her 90th birthday with a drop-in reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Rogers.

Whitehorn was born and raised in Little Rock and moved to Rogers in 1972. She has been a member of the church for more than 40 years.

Guests are asked not to bring presents, but cards are welcome.

Author Lostetter finalist for award

Marina Lostetter of Fayetteville is one of 12 writers and 12 illustrators to be honored during the 29th annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards on April 14 at the Wilshire EbellTheatre in Los Angeles.

Lostetter is a finalist in the Writers of the Future Contest. This is her third time being nominated for the award.

The ceremony will feature science fiction writers from around the world. Winning stories and illustrations will appear in the annual anthology L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers and Illustrators of the Future, Vol.

29.

Cemetery group hosts work day

The Springtown Cemetery Association will host its annual meeting and work day at 9 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery, 8 miles west of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport on Arkansas 12. The public is invited to attend and help out.

Another clean-up and work day is scheduled in the fall.

Photo club cites winners

The Photography Club of the Ozarks in Harrison has announced the winners of its second spring photography show.

Joe Hale won the color category for “Egret,” while George Simpkins earned first-place honors in the black and white category for “Rock.” Simpkins also won in a special music/musical category for “Violin” and took second place honors in the color category.

Marcie Grim took home third place in the color category, while Lee Bailey, Rose Carter and Philly Rains earned honorable mentions.

Carter took second place in the black and whitecategory, while R.M. Szabo took third place. Honorable mentions went to Szabo and Rhonda Mills.

Bailey and Kathryn Jeffries tookhonorable mentions in the musical category.

The exhibit will be on display through March 29 at Backyard Framer, 117 N. Main St. in Harrison, and is to the public.

Local preteen will complete

Chloe Rachelle Jones, 11, of Garfield has been chosen as a state finalist for the National American Miss Arkansas Pageant set for June 27-29 at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale.

Jones will participate in the preteen pageant. She isthe daughter of Rashidi and Michelle Jones.

The pageant features girls ages 4 to 14 competing for a $1,000 cash award; a trip to the national pageantin California; and two VIP tickets to Disneyland.

Music group honors couple

William and Patricia Medley of Fayetteville were named Music Teachers National Association Foundation Fellows at the group’s national conference March 9-13 in Anaheim, Calif.

The Medleys are both certified music teachers and duo pianists who have toured the United States, Canada and Australia. Each was awarded the Master Certificate by MTNA, and they were named Teachers of the Year in 2006 by the Arkansas State Music Teachers Association.
