100 YEARS AGO March 21, 1913

At a meeting of the Arkansas National Guard Association at the Hotel Marion last night, arrangements were made for continuing the guard for the next two years, despite the fact that no appropriation was made by the legislature. An offer was made by the Board of Trade of Helena to subscribe $3,500 for this purpose, provided the encampment is held at that city. A meeting of the Little Rock Board of Trade has been called to consider the proposition of making an offer for the encampment.

50 YEARS AGO March 21, 1963

An official of the Green Bay Paper & Pulp Division of the Green Bay Packaging Co. of Wisconsin today practically ruled out North Little Rock’s Maumelle industrial area as a possible site for a paper mill. J.E. Barnhart, director of the engineering of the Green Bay firm, told the Democrat: “We are not interested in Maumelle… we are still looking.” Barnhart confirmed that it was he personally, who came to North Little Rock, upon invitation, several weeks ago on a site selection tour of four states. But he was quick to point out he had looked at “numerous” sites. The other three states were Texas,Louisiana and Mississippi, he revealed.

25 YEARS AGO March 21, 1988

An undercover investigation of four unidentified nursing homes was not meant as an indictment of the nursing home industry, Gov. Bill Clinton said Sunday. “Nobody is trying to indict the industry,” he said. “We are trying to prevent these types of abuses.” Clinton answered questions after a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Child Development Center of First United Methodist Church. Clinton said the investigation was not meant as a “broadside attack” but rather as a chance for improvement.

10 YEARS AGO March 21, 2003

Gov. Mike Huckabee on Thursday issued a proclamation making today “a day of prayer for our service men and women.” The proclamation noted that hundreds of Arkansans are “directly involved in the current mission to free the people of Iraq from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.” It said that “we pray for the safety of all those involved in the liberation of Iraq; and … for President Bush’s leadership; and … for victory over terrorism so that no one will have to live at the mercy of an outlaw regime.”
