Library to Begin Partnership Tutoring Program

ROGERS — A free tutoring program for children in prekindergarten through elementary school is scheduled to begin next month at the Rogers Public Library.

“We’ve been working on this since last year, and it finally coming together,” said Judy Casey, library director.

The Care-A-Child program is a partnership between the library and the Swasthan Seva Foundation in Bentonville.

Swasthan Seva Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing all children “an equal opportunity to develop to their full potential and realize their dreams regardless of gender, class, caste, faith, color, race, physical and mental ability,” according to the foundation’s website.

Phone messages left on the foundation’s voicemail system Wednesday were not returned.

The 30-minute tutoring sessions are scheduled to run through the summer, Casey said.

“The sessions will be between 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday at the library. Teenage volunteers will help the younger children with reading, spelling, sentence comprehension and math,” Casey said.

The teenagers will receive tutor training prior to the beginning of the program, library officials said.

Youngsters accepted into the program will be given the Wide Range Achievement Test 4, to determine skill level and weaknesses.

Swapnila Das, a licensed psychologist, will administer the test April 13, according to a news release.

“Since we are just beginning, we will probably be able to accept about 12 youngsters for the program this summer,” Casey said. “If the program works well and we have a good response, we will try to expand the program in the fall.”

The Bentonville Public Library began its Care-A Child program in February, officials said.

“I don’t know much about the program,” said Hadi Dudley, Bentonville Public Library director.

“Sue Pekel, our children’s librarian, is the expert and she is out of the office today,” Dudley said Wednesday. “As far as I know, our program is working well and has been well received.”
