BRIEFLY: Nettleton Edges Rogers Heritage

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

In a battle of two Arkansas teams, Class 5A Nettleton pushed across a run in the seventh to defeat Rogers Heritage 3-2 in high school baseball Tuesday in Vero Beach, Fla.

Heritage (5-6) jumped to a 2-0 lead after three innings by the Raider clawed back to tie the game, then added the game-winner in the seventh.

The War Eagles finished with eight hits and couldn’t take advantage of several scoring chances.

“We had runners on in every inning, except the seventh and several in scoring position, but we couldn’t come up with the timely hit,” Heritage coach Keith Kilgore said. “But overall, I thought it was one of our best games putting together offense, defense and the effort on the mound. It’s something we can build off of.”

Sophomore Kacey Murphy (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits over seven innings. He also contributed a run-scoring single in the third inning. Troy Cahill was Heritage’s only player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Heritage finishes play in Vero Beach with two games today against Bennington, Okla. and Sebastian River of Vero Beach.
