River Rhapsodies to open with ‘Visions of America’

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-14 Parker Lexus River Rhapsodies Chamber Series will open Sept. 24 with a concert titled “Visions of America” in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock.

The program (performers to be announced) will include the String Quartet No. 12 in F major, op.96, “American,” by Antonin Dvorak; Samuel Barber’s String Quartet, op.11; and Visions and Miracles by Christopher Theofanidis, the orchestra’s 2013-14 composer of the year.

The rest of the lineup (all concerts, 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Clinton center):

Oct. 22: “Sonatas for Two.” Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 5 in F major, “Spring”; Gabriel Faure: Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, op.13; Amy Beach: Violin Sonata in a minor, op.34

Nov. 12: “Artist of Distinction.” Inbal Segev, cello. Sergei Prokofiev: String Quartet No. 1 in b minor, op.50; Heitor Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1; George Enescu: Octet in C major, op.7

Jan. 28, 2014: “Dvorak’s Piano Trio.” Gustav Mahler: Piano Quartet in a minor; Alban Berg: Lyric Suite; Dvorak: Piano Trio No. 3 in f minor, op.65

March 4: “Brahms the Romantic.” Toru Takemitsu: Rain Tree; Bela Bartok: Contrasts; Johannes Brahms: Clarinet Quintet in b minor, op.115

April 22: “Beethoven and Wagner.” Theofanidis: O Vis Aeternitatis for string quartet and piano; Beethoven: Piano Trio No. 5 in D major, op.70 No. 1, “Ghost”; Astor Piazzolla: Histoire du Tango; Richard Wagner: Siegfried Idyll.

Go fly a kite

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, 239 Turpentine Creek Lane, off Arkansas 23 south of Eureka Springs, hosts the 23rd annual Eureka Springs Kite Festival, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. This year’s event, sponsored by KaleidoKites of Eureka Springs, is titled “Art With an Altitude.”

Bring your own kite or buy one at the event; KaleidoKites staff members will be available to help children in kite-making and -flying techniques (a donation to the refuge is requested for such assistance). The shop will also donate a Japanese “Rokkaku” fighting kite and a tiger kite for an on-site raffle.

The event also features vendors, contests and activities for parents and kids. Area band the Skillet Lickers will perform. Admission is free for kite fliers; regular admission prices apply to tour the refuge.

Village benefit

The DePue Brothers Band - Kevin MacConnell, bass; Don Liuzzi, drums and vocals; Wallace DePue Jr., lead vocals; Mike Munford, banjo; Mark Cosgrove, guitar; and Jason DePue, violin - will blend classical with bluegrass at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Woodlands Auditorium, Ponce de Leon Center, DeSoto Boulevard and Balboa Drive, Hot Springs Village.

The show is a benefit by the Hot Springs Village Community Foundation; net proceeds will go to establish an endowment for the Jessieville School District Foundation. Tickets are $25.
