Police probing school case

Two food-service employees who resigned from the Huntsville School District this month are being investigated by the Huntsville Police Department in connection with missing tax dollars, Huntsville Police Capt. Todd Thomas said.

No charges have been filed, he said.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Thomas said. “It’s fairly complicated. … It’s a lengthy investigation. It’s going to take some time to go through all the records.”

Thomas said the case requires going through mountains of data.

Debbie Cornett resigned her position as district food service director, as did Kammy Middleton, a cook for Huntsville High School, said Assistant Superintendent Shelby Sisemore. The Huntsville School Board accepted their resignations March 8. They had submitted their resignations a few days before the board met, Sisemore said.

Sisemore said he could not answer questions about the reasons for their resignations because the administration cannot openly discuss personnel issues.

Cornett said she had no comment, but she did verify that she worked for the district for 21 years.

Middleton worked for the district for nine years, Sisemore said. A phone number for Middleton was not available.

Cornett would have earned a salary of about $30,000, based on the district salary schedule. Middleton earned a salary of about $13,000, according to the salary schedule.
