‘Beautiful chip’ holds Daly to 10

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - John Daly at least was proud of his pitch from 30 yards to a foot of the cup.

It allowed him to limit the damage to a 10.

Whatever hopes the former Arkansas Razorback had of making the cut Friday in the Tampa Bay Championship ended early in his second round when he made a 10 on the par-4 third hole at Innisbrook. He hooked his 4-iron hybrid into the trees and decided to pitch out toward the fairway.

That was his mistake.

“As soon as you make that decision,” he said, “you can’t go back to the tee.”

His second shot clipped a tree and went backward into bushes and grass so deep he had to take a penalty drop. His fourth shot hit another tree and went back to where it was, only this time he thought he could play it. Daly didn’t pull off that shot, and then took another penalty drop. He barely got out into the rough with his seventh shot, and then knocked his eighth shot to about 30 yards short of the green.

“Beautiful chip,” said Daly, who also had a double bogey on No. 11 to go with two birdies and four bogeys in an 81 to gave him a 153.

Rookie Shawn Stefani kept the lead despite shooting a 70 to follow his 65 Thursday. The 31-year-old is a stroke ahead of Adam Scott (66) and K.J. Choi (67), who totaled 136.

Tag Ridings (Razorbacks) shot a 70 with two birdies and a bogey and was tied for seventh with Sergio Garcia at 138. Bryce Molder (Conway) shot a 69 with three birdies and a bogey for a 141. David Lingmerth (Razorbacks) had a 70 with four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey for a 144. Scott Gardiner (Farmington) was at 146 after his second consecutive 73, with two birdies and four bogeys. Ken Duke (Arkadelphia, Henderson State) shot a 72 with three birdies and four bogeys and was at 148.

For Daly, it was the 15th time he has made at least a 10 on one hole - at least on the PGA Tour.

He was headed for a record number in the Australian Open in 2011 until he ran out of golf balls on the par-5 11th hole. He would have been playing his 16th shot.

LPGA TOUR Lee on top

PHOENIX - Jee Young Lee birdied three of the last four holes to take a one stroke lead over Ai Miyazato on another hot day at the LPGA Founders Cup.

Lee, the South Korean player who won the tour’s 2005 South Korean event, had a bogey-free 8-under-par 64 on Friday to reach 15-under 129 and break the tournament 36-hole record.

Miyazato bogeyed her final hole for a 67 a day after shooting a tournament-record 63.

Third-ranked Stacy Lewis, coming off a victory two weeks ago in Singapore, was four strokes back after a 65. The former Arkansas Razorback had an eagle on the 16th hole to go with six birdies and a bogey.

Stacy Prammanasudh (Conway) was at 141 after a 72 with two birdies and two bogeys.

CHAMPIONS TOUR Frost ahead by one

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - David Frost shot an 8-under-par 63 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic.

Frost had eight birdies in his bogey-free round, four on the first five holes on the back nine and another on the par-5 closing hole. Three of his approach shots stopped within a foot of the hole for tap-in birdies.

Couples, the 2010 winner at Newport Beach Country Club, had seven birdies and a bogey.

Jim Gallagher Jr. opened with a 66, and Bernhard Langer topped the group at 67.
