ROGERS — Two Rogers Community School Recreation Association programs were honored Thursday at the annual Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association convention in Fort Smith.

“This is a very big deal for us,” said Rick Stocker, city recreation director. “These are the first awards we’ve won in a couple years. This is a big honor for the association.”

The summer camp program won the Outstanding Tourism or Recreation Administration Program award. The average daily attendance at summer camp was 200 children, Stocker said.

The middle school soccer program was awarded the Outstanding Sports Management Program award. More than 300 children participated in the soccer program.

The programs are part of the Rogers Activities Center, said Coleta Paris, center director.

“Both programs are very successful and well attended,” Paris said. “We are extremely proud of the recognition we are receiving from the state association. We added ‘award winning’ to our brochure, listing our programs, that will be distributed to schools after spring break.”

The Rogers Activity Center won the Arkansas Governor’s Fitness Opportunity Award in 2009 and a Presidential Citation in 1979, Paris said.
