The most effective action to stop hog farms is to stop consuming hog meat.

No need to give up pork. Just buy exclusively from small producers you know and trust.
I buy all mine from Mason Creek Farm. Costs a little more but worth every penny, and I prefer quality over quantity anyway.
I've visited the farm. I know MCF is not polluting any rivers. They don't pack their animals onto the land like sardines. There are no massive waste lagoons (that can breach and pollute waterways). The lucky pigs at MCF all have plenty of room to roam and root and they enjoy about the best life a livestock animal could hope for in this country today. The farm is even acknowledged by the Animal Welfare Approved label --last I heard this was the only farm in Arkansas to have earned this label.
This is not a commercial. I have no vested interest in MCF. I do know and trust the owners Glen and Rose, and I hope their farm will prosper and continue to provide quality pork so I can continue to be a happy customer.

Pork is the least efficient food animal. It has a 9-1 ratio of conversion from input to output, according to the book
"Diet for a Small Planet." Subsidized grain production is the only reason it's feasible.
