City, Corps agree to lake-use study

— The city of Hot Springs and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have signed an agreement to study the possibility of drawing water from Lake Ouachita for use by cities.

Hot Springs Mayor Ruth Carney and Col. Jeff Eckstein of the Corps’ Vicksburg, Miss., district signed the agreement on behalf of the Mid-Arkansas Water Alliance.

Hot Springs utilities manager Richard Penn said the city is using more than 80 percent of its capacity and that the study could lead to water that would solve the city’s supply challenges.

The study is expected to take about two years to complete and will cost about $300,000.
