Vatican-China standoff an issue for pope

As pope, Benedict clashed with the Chinese government on the issue of appointing Catholic bishops in the Communist country. The new pope will face the task of improving relations between China and the Vatican.
Of the long list of problems the next pope will inherit once the white smoke rises in Rome, few on the diplomatic front can rival the bitter, intractable relationship between the Vatican and the Chinese government.
