Rutledge named to UA board of trustees

Gov. Mike Beebe on Friday announced the appointment of John “Reynie” Rutledge to the University of Arkansas board of trustees.

Rutledge, 63, of Searcy is the chairman and chief executive officer of First Security Bank. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and serves on the Walton College Executive Advisory Board and the UAMS Foundation Board, Beebe’s office said.

Rutledge’s replaces John Tyson, who sent Beebe a resignation letter Feb. 5 stating that he was resigning Feb. 8. He cited time constraints and frustration.

“My schedule in recent months has made it increasingly difficult for me to attend meetings and be an effective board member,” Tyson wrote. “I do not see that changing, and because of that, and the fact that I have become increasingly frustrated with the board’s inability to make meaningful change in the structure and delivery of higher education in Arkansas, I think it is best that I step down now.”

Rutledge will serve the remainder of Tyson's appointment, with the term expiring March 1, 2017.

Meanwhile, Bob Burns, 68, of Little Rock was named to the Arkansas State Police Commission. Burns is the chairman and CEO of Magnolia-based Farmer’s Bank and Trust. A graduate of Henderson State University and UA, Burns is the president of the Arkansas State Police Foundation, Beebe’s office said.

Burns’ appointment expires Jan. 14, 2020. He replaces Steve Smith.
