Hearing set in Arkansas over youth’s life sentence

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Supreme Court has set an April 4 hearing to consider a resentencing request from a man who was sentenced to life in prison without parole when he was 14 years old.
The high court scheduled the hearing for Kuntrell Jackson, who received the life sentence after the shooting death of a store clerk during an attempted robbery in 1999. Another boy shot the clerk, but because Jackson was present he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated robbery.
Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles and sent Jackson’s case back to state courts.
Jackson’s attorneys are asking the Arkansas Supreme Court to send his case back to circuit court for resentencing.
