Lewis up for ESPY award

Former University of Arkansas All-American Stacy Lewis is one of four nominees for the ESPY for Best Female Golfer, as awarded by ESPN. Lewis, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, is a four-time All-SEC player, the 2008 NCAA champion and the reigning player of the year on the LPGA Tour. She is ranked second in the Rolex player rankings behind Inbee Park, the LPGA’s 2012 money leader who won last week’s Northwest Arkansas Championship in Rogers. Park joins Lewis among on the ESPY nominee list, along with Jiyai Shin and Na Yeon Choi. Fan voting for ESPYs can be done at http://espn.go.com/espys/2013.

ATHLETICS Arkansas 21st in Directors Cup

Led by its men’s and women’s track and field teams, Arkansas finished No. 21 in this year’s Directors Cup standings, which rank the overall performance by an athletic department’s teams and are released by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors of America. It’s the third consecutive top-25 finish by Arkansas and its fifth in six years. The Razorbacks finished third among schools with 19 or fewer sports. Arkansas’ men’s track and field team won the national indoor title, took third outdoors and was eighth in cross country. The women’s track and field team was fourth indoors, 13th outdoors and 18th in cross country. In golf, the Arkansas men finished 10th and the women 13th. The women’s gymnastics team finished 10th and the women’s volleyball team played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. The women’s swimming and diving team finished 26th at the NCAA meet, its best since being 25th in 1990. The Razorbacks’ baseball and softball teams both reached NCAA regional play. Arkansas had a school-record 830 Directors Cup points, surpassing last year’s 811 and ranked fifth overall among SEC schools. Eight Razorbacks women’s teams combined to score 460 points.
