Drive In For Old-School Fun

Outdoor movies still a tradition at 112 Theater

Curl up next to your sweetheart or pile into a car with your family for a double feature at the 112 Drive-In Theater this Fourth of July.

The drive-in experience is less expensive than going to a movie theater, and people get to watch two movies on the large screen, says Ellen Bowling, theater manager. She adds that guests get to see movies under the stars, kids can play in the grassy area, and couples can bring their young children, allowing them to have more privacy than at a theater and worry less about them crying.

She notes that films shown come to the drive-in two or three weeks after their opening weekend. This weekend, “Man of Steel” will be played first, followed by “42,” and over July 4 weekend, moviegoers can check out “Monsters University” and “Man of Steel.”

Once patrons are in a parking spot, they can tune their radio to 92.7 FM and choose to sit inside or outside of the car for the movie. They can bring chairs and blankets to spread out in their parking space, and Bowling suggests bringing mosquito repellent as well if they’re going to sit outside.

Food can be brought in, but the drive-in also has a concessions stand offering nachos, funnel cakes and French fries, she says. Other menu items include popcorn, hamburgers, hot dogs, burritos, corn dogs, pickles, beef sticks, pretzels, candy and ice cream products, according to the 112 Drive-In website.

The theater offers Coca-Colaproducts, along with coffee and cappuccino. Alcohol is not allowed at the drive-in.

The drive-in has now become digital, no longer using film for the movies, Bowling says.

The 112 Drive-In is one of some 450 drive-in theaters still open in the United States, according Drive-ins.com. There are 4,488 locations that are now closed, according to the website.
