Apartment Complex Receives Accolades

FAYETTEVILLE - Fayetteville’s first platinum LEED-certified building has been recognized on the international stage.

Eco Modern Flats, a 96-unit apartment complex at 130 S. Hill Ave., was named one of 27 finalists in the Urban Land Institute’s annual Global Awards and Excellence competition.

The competition recognizes excellence in land use practice, according to a Wednesday news release. Other finalists are projects in San Antonio, Atlanta, San Francisco, New York City, Hong Kong and Hamburg, Germany. A smaller group of winners will be announced in November at the Urban Land Institute’s fall meeting in Chicago.

The complex opened in 2011 after extensive renovation and features energy-efficient windows, lighting and insulation; rooftop solar panels; native landscaping; and irrigation from cisterns.

The project was designed by Modus Studio and developed by Specialized Real Estate Group, the Fayetteville-based company behind the Sterling Frisco apartments at West Avenue and Lafayette Street and the West Center apartments being built south of Center Street between Duncan and Harmon avenues.

Bob Dant, a Portland, Ore., real estate investor contributed money for Eco Modern Flats, according to Sarah King, marketing and community outreach coordinator for Specialized Real Estate Group.

The National Apartment Association presented two awards Saturday to Eco Modern Flats for “best community, less than five years (under 150 units)” and “best community, green housing” at a conference in San Diego. The association is a federation of more than 63,000 multifamily housing complexes in the United States and Canada, according to the organization’s website.
