HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Genoa Central coach retires

Genoa Central Coach Eddie Jackson has retired because of health problems, Genoa Athletic Director Bear Bryant said.

Jackson coached the Class 3A Dragons the last three seasons - the school’s first three as a varsity program - but had a brain tumor removed in the off season and also had a serious knee problem, Bryant said.

Jackson led Prescott to the Class A state championships in 1973 and 1975 and to the Class AA state championship in 1995.

Mansfield Coach Jason Gill was named Greenwood Junior High School’s new coach Wednesday afternoon, Greenwood Coach Rick Jones said.

Gill coached the Class 3A Tigers to a 47-33 record the last six seasons, highlighted by a conference championship and quarterfinal playoff berth in 2010.

Jones said former junior high coach Kenneth Thornton will continue to work with the team’s linemen.

ATHLETICS Hogan charged with DWI

UALR associate athletic director Gary Hogan was arrested for driving while intoxicated and cited on two other charges last week, according to a North Little Rock police report.

Hogan, who has worked at UALR in various capacities since 1985, was arrested on charges of DWI, refusal to submit and unsafe driving last Thursday night, according to the report.

The report said Hogan’s 2012 white Chevrolet Corvette was pulled over at 9:36 p.m. last Thursday at 4600 Hampton Road in North Little Rock. A portable Breathalyzer test was administered and revealed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.148. Arkansas’ legal limit is 0.08.

He was taken to the Pulaski County jail, where he was booked and later released on his own recognizance.

Hogan is scheduled to appear in court July 15.

UALR Athletic Director Chris Peterson said Wednesday that Hogan, 63, will not face disciplinary action from the university.

“Gary Hogan has been a fantastic ambassador for UALR and the greater Little Rock area for 26 years,” Peterson said. “He made a mistake that he is personally paying a heavy price for. … I know Gary has the issue in hand and we will go forward.”

Hogan served as sports director at KTHV-TV, Channel 11, in Little Rock before compiling a 275-299 record as UALR’s baseball coach in 1985-1996. He resigned as coach to take a job with UALR’s athletic department where he has remained since, serving as one of its chief fundraisers. UALR’s home baseball field in Curran Conway Park is named after Hogan.
