Formal notice of a contest to the claims of Judge George W. Hays to the nomination as the Democratic candidate for governor, was served on the Camden jurist yesterday afternoon by Stephen Brundidge of Searcy. Charging that gross frauds were perpetrated in nine counties in Arkansas in Saturday’s primary election, which robbed him of his rightful majority, Mr. Brundidge began his fight. He says he will fight to a finish. In opening his contest yesterday, Mr. Brundidge placed his case in the hands of former Attorney General Hal L. Leaders of various statewide organizations were eager yesterday to attack a proposed increase in the state gasoline tax to get road building funds, but backers were not so enthusiastic in their support. Critics, who labeled the proposal “silly… naive… wasteful,” included leaders of the Arkansas Automobile Association, the Arkansas Farm Bureau and the Arkansas County Judges Association. Ongoing construction makes it hard for passers-by to miss the nascent Clinton presidential library. A new sign now makes it downright impossible. A sign, measuring 11 feet high by 70 feet long, now hangs from the $160 million skeletal structure under construction near Little Rock’s River Market District. The sign simply says “Clinton Library” as a way of pointing out a looming landmark to motorists on Interstate 30 and nearby, said William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation President Skip Rutherford. “You and I know it’s the Clinton library, but many of the travelers passing through don’t know what it is,” Rutherford said.
